Preparation for C2: Themes for discussion

Lithuania Group: Themes

Maturing Personalities & Self-Knowledge   Growing up, we develop our own personalities. If you accept and love yourself, you are more confident and others are more likely to love you too. If you are different and look different from others, they can use it to hurt you. If you think you are better than others, you are a narcissist and others dislike you.
Simplicity vs Complexity The more mature we become, the more problems we have. In adulthood, we have to solve problems which are bigger and more global than in childhood.                                                                                                                                       More Freedoms  When we were younger we had less freedom than now. Growing up we have more freedom and present ourselves in the way we want, but not everybody accepts/likes our freedom the way we want it.                                                                                   Expectations Teachers and parents expect better marks. Parents expect from us to be more responsible. They want us to find a good job, create a strong family, but they are forgetting about our own interests and that our generation is not like them.
Age-relative
The older we are, we can do more ‘adult’ things, that parents let us do relying on our being responsible for ourselves and on our maturity. This confidence in us develops independence in us and prepares us to be adults.

Unemployment & Migration In Lithuania, unemployment rate measures the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of labour force. Everyone is moving out of the country. There is a complete disregard for employees in Lithuania. We also have to put our age and gender on our resume, even a picture sometimes, which opens many doors for possible discrimination.

Cost of British Education Until 2009, British governments (by law) had to pay half of the cost of students’ university education. Because of economic problems this law was abolished. Now students have to pay high fees. It is harder to study in Britain as education is now very expensive.
Prices/Currency & Quality of Life  Back in 2015 in Lithuania, the currency was ‘Lits’. Nowadays, we use ‘Euros’. Prices increased very much but salaries didn’t. We are poorer than 5 years ago and the quality of our lives also decreased.

Easy Travel  It is easy to travel in the EU because there is no currency difference and no visa. - work: we can get employed in different EU countries without many problems
- education: we get a chance to study in our dream university in the EU and without big language barriers because English is used as international language.

Be Yourself no Matter What They Say

Expressing yourself by artistic means (music, art, theatre, games)

Then please think:

1) What adventure or new experience would you like to try out in connection to your theme? Can you think of any activities, visits or events (which you may have never done before) which are related to your theme?

2) How can you share your theme with the other students? Through games? Conversations? Visits?

(for example the Luxembourg students’ theme was “pressure" and we played a very competitive VR laser-tag game!)

3) What would you like to learn and/or make during the week with all the other students?

4) Would you like to invite someone from outside school to help you explore your theme (for example the Luxembourg students invited the Minister of Education to have a discussion!!).
